In a recent demolition carried out by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) at the request of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), more than 200 families in Nuwalege, Abuja, have been left homeless. The demolition was executed to make room for an expansion of the Presidential Air Fleet near Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Despite being forced to relocate to nearby communities such as Zamani, Sauka, and Gwagwalada, the displaced residents claim they have not received any compensation from the government. Many of them, including long-term residents and indigenous people, say they were not properly notified of the demolition and are now struggling to find shelter.
Affected residents have expressed frustration over the lack of compensation and the suddenness of the demolition. Some have attempted legal action, but so far, they have seen little progress. The NAF has advised the displaced individuals to take their grievances to the Ministry of Defence or the Federal Capital Territory Administration, stating that it does not compensate for land allocated to it by the federal government.
Government officials, including the FCT Minister, have yet to provide clear answers regarding compensation, leaving the displaced families in uncertainty.
