The Coalition of Indigenous Youth Nationalities of Plateau State has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appoint a minister from Plateau to ensure equitable representation in the Federal Executive Council. This appeal comes in response to the absence of a Plateau State representative following the resignation of former Governor Simon Bako Lalong, who stepped down as Labour Minister earlier this year to assume his Senate seat.
Addressing reporters in Jos on Wednesday, Coalition Chairman Comrade Paul Joshua Dekete expressed concern over Plateau’s lack of representation. “It is disheartening that Plateau State has been left without a minister. We urge President Tinubu to appoint a representative from our state to restore our sense of inclusion and fairness as guaranteed by the constitution,” Dekete said.
Dekete also highlighted the broader issues of national hardship, stating that despite the current economic difficulties, the youth coalition will not participate in the planned protest on August 1. He warned that the protest could be hijacked by opportunistic elements and emphasized the need for the government to focus on implementing people-oriented policies.
The coalition proposed a review of fuel prices rather than a return to subsidies, and called for the dismissal of any cabinet members linked to increasing insecurity, pending thorough investigations. They also stressed the need for expanded support for vulnerable populations, including internally displaced persons, orphans, and widows.
While affirming the right to protest, Dekete cautioned against potential risks due to prevailing security issues in Plateau State. He urged the government to enhance vigilance and collaboration with security agencies to prevent any threats to local communities.
