The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, announced on Thursday that the Nigeria Police Force is considering seeking assistance from other security agencies and the Nigerian military to address the ongoing violence in several states. Egbetokun made this statement during a media briefing in Abuja.
He explained that the events in major cities on the first day of the protest have escalated into mass uprisings and widespread looting. “Hoodlums have been let loose on innocent Nigerians, looting and destroying their hard-earned businesses and properties,” he said.
Egbetokun emphasized that the rioters’ primary motives are looting and destruction of both private and government property. In response, the Nigeria Police Force has placed all units on red alert. “Our officers are fully mobilized and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to any further threats to public safety and order. We remain committed and resolute in protecting life and property and ensuring that law and order are maintained across the nation,” he stated.
He urged groups exploiting their constitutional rights to protest to remember that the same constitution requires them to obey the laws of the land. Egbetokun assured that the police are equipped to handle the situation and will seek support from other security agencies, including the military, if necessary.
Egbetokun appealed to law-abiding citizens to remain calm and cooperate with the police and other security agencies. “Your safety is our top priority, and we will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure continued peace and stability in our country,” he concluded.
