President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has touched down in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to take part in the 19th G-20 Summit, a gathering of global leaders. The Nigerian president arrived on Sunday at 11:03 p.m. local time (Monday, 3:03 a.m. Nigerian time) and was warmly received by Ambassador Breno Costa from Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations.
High-Level Nigerian Delegation in Attendance
President Tinubu’s delegation includes several key ministers:
- Yusuf Tuggar – Minister of Foreign Affairs
- Idi Mukhtar Maiha – Minister of Livestock Development
- Hannatu Musawa – Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity
- Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi – Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security
- Amb. Mohammed Mohammed – Director General of the National Intelligence Agency
Focus of the G-20 Summit
Hosted by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, the summit’s theme is “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.” Discussions will revolve around:
- Sustainable Development in economic, social, and environmental aspects
- Global Governance Reforms
- Climate Change Initiatives
- The Digital Economy
In addition, the summit will address pressing geopolitical issues, such as the Israel–Hamas conflict and the ongoing U.S.–China tensions.
Nigeria’s Role at the Summit
President Tinubu is set to engage in strategic bilateral meetings aimed at boosting Nigeria’s socio-economic progress. Nigeria’s participation aligns with the G-20’s commitment to tackling global issues like food security and eliminating extreme poverty by 2030.
The G-20 includes 19 countries and the European Union. This year, both the African Union and the European Union were invited, underscoring the global focus on sustainable development and social equity. The summit will conclude on November 19, with world leaders expected to endorse critical agreements to confront global challenges.
