The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, has issued an emergency appeal to raise N2.5 billion to combat food insecurity across Nigeria. Over the next 18 months, the funds will be used to improve livelihoods, health, nutrition, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services in the most affected regions.
The appeal comes amid warnings that over 31.5 million Nigerians could face severe food insecurity between January and October 2024, driven by conflict, inflation, and economic challenges. Rising food prices, especially of staples like grains, and a 70% increase in cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition among children, underscore the urgency of the situation.
In response, the NRCS will host its first-ever Annual Fundraising Gala Night in Lagos, themed “Keeping Humanity Alive,” to support hunger relief and WASH initiatives. NRCS President, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, expressed excitement about the event, emphasizing its goal of alleviating hunger and improving water and sanitation conditions for vulnerable communities.
