Muktar Betara, a member of the House of Representatives representing Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar Federal Constituency in Borno State, has donated N100 million to aid victims of the recent flood in Maiduguri, Borno State. The flood, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam following heavy rainfall, claimed 37 lives and displaced over 400,000 people.
Betara made the donation during an on-site assessment with Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Thursday. Expressing his condolences, Betara praised Zulum’s quick response to the disaster and committed to advocating for more support in the National Assembly once sessions resume.
In a statement, Betara said, “On behalf of myself, my family, and the people of Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar, I donate N100 million to support those affected by this tragic incident.” He also pledged to raise the issue of the flood disaster as a matter of urgent public importance when the House reconvenes.
Additionally, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, reported that 29 states and 172 local government areas have been affected by flooding nationwide, impacting over 1 million people and displacing more than 625,000 individuals.
NEMA had previously forecasted the likelihood of severe flooding in several states between July and November 2024.
