The House of Representatives Committee on Steel Development raised alarms on Thursday about the proliferation of substandard iron rods contributing to an increase in building collapses across Nigeria.
Chairperson Rep. Zainab Gimba highlighted the issue during an interactive session with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in Abuja, emphasizing that faulty iron rods—such as 10 mm rods measuring only 7.56 mm, 12 mm rods at 9.25 mm, and 16 mm rods at 11.25 mm—are linked to the rising incidence of structural failures.
Gimba criticized the lack of action from supervising agencies, pointing out that fake iron rods are being openly transported without adequate regulation. She announced that the committee will launch an investigation and seek to hold offenders accountable.
The lawmaker stressed the need for comprehensive stakeholder collaboration to address this urgent problem, citing its severe impact on safety and the economy. She called for renewed efforts to support the steel sector, including the ongoing Metallurgical Bill and the revitalization of Ajaokuta Steel Company, in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s economic and developmental agenda.
Gimba urged the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Nigeria Consumer Protection Agency to enhance their oversight to curb the issue. She also underscored the need for strict measures and potential legal actions against those involved in the production and distribution of substandard materials.
The committee, committed to advancing the steel industry and reducing reliance on oil, remains resolute in its mission to ensure the safety and development of Nigeria’s infrastructure.
