Brigadier General Sani Usman (retd.), a former Spokesman of the Nigerian Army, has attributed the escalating insecurity in Nigeria to the lack of an effective policing system.
Speaking at a two-day virtual event organized by Daria Media to review President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office, Usman emphasized that issues like insurgency, terrorism, and kidnappings could have been mitigated with better investment in the policing system.
“Over the last 25 years of democratic governance, how much have we invested in our policing system?” Usman questioned. “I have visited several countries, and some do not have armed forces, but every country has a policing system. The neglect of our policing system over time has led to the current security problems.”
He criticized the absence of community policing and highlighted the need for a robust legal framework to support effective policies. Usman pointed out that security challenges are influenced by political, economic, and social factors, and questioned the effectiveness of the police council and other related bodies over the past two decades.
