On August 17, 2024, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova alleged that Ukrainian forces used U.S.-made rockets, possibly American HIMARS, to destroy a key bridge in the Glushkov district of Russia’s Kursk region. The attack reportedly killed “volunteers” who were aiding in the evacuation of civilians.
Zakharova claimed the bridge over the Seim River was “completely destroyed,” exacerbating the difficulty of evacuating civilians from the affected area. The accusation highlights ongoing tensions and the international dimensions of the conflict, with Moscow frequently criticizing Kyiv’s Western allies for their support.
The veracity of Russia’s claims could not be independently verified. Russian authorities have reported that over 120,000 civilians have been evacuated due to ongoing clashes. Ukraine’s recent cross-border offensive has reportedly led to the capture of 82 settlements and significant territory.
In response, the United States has defended its support for Ukraine’s use of weaponry, deeming it a justified protective measure. Fighting continues in strategic areas, including south of Korenevo and in Sudzha, which has become a key target for Ukrainian forces.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, air defenses intercepted all 14 Russian drones launched in an overnight attack. The drones, reportedly Shahed models, were downed over various regions, including near Kyiv, with no immediate casualties reported.
