Former African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, joined demonstrators at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos State on the morning of October 1, 2024. Arriving at 8:50 am, Sowore addressed reporters, stressing that the protest represents the people’s rejection of the government’s Independence Day celebrations. He described it as a crucial step towards achieving the “promised land” for Nigeria.
Sowore questioned whether the government had not been given enough chances, pointing to the actions of former President Muhammadu Buhari as evidence of failed leadership. He noted that while more time had been granted to the government, it led to price hikes, luxury purchases for officials, and poor living conditions for citizens.
The protest, which coincides with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, is heavily monitored by security personnel, including police and local safety officials. Protesters are marching along Awolowo Way.
