In a significant political shift, Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, the representative for the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made during a House of Representatives session on October 30, 2024, by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who read a letter from Gumi outlining his reasons for the move.
In his letter, Gumi cited ongoing internal crises within the PDP as a key factor in his decision to switch parties. He expressed concerns over the lack of organizational structure within the PDP in his constituency, noting, “It is noteworthy to state that the PDP has two chairmen in my constituency. One was unconstitutionally removed while the other decamped with me, hence the party lacks structure in my constituency. This has made it difficult for me to provide good representation and prompt delivery of dividends of democracy to my constituents.”
Following the reading of his letter, Speaker Abbas recognized Gumi as a new member of the APC. However, the session was interrupted by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, who raised a point of order arguing that Gumi’s defection should lead to the announcement of a vacancy for his seat in the House. Chinda claimed there was no ongoing conflict within the PDP to justify Gumi’s departure. Despite his objections, Chinda was ruled out of order.
Gumi’s defection adds to the ongoing political realignment in Nigeria as the APC continues to attract members from opposing parties amid internal challenges faced by the PDP.
