The Swiss Federation has donated €1.2 million to assist flood victims in Borno State, Nigeria, following the recent disaster that displaced over one million people. The funds were contributed to the Borno State Flood Disaster Relief Fund, aimed at providing essential support to those affected.
Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Nicolas Lang, led a delegation from the Swiss Embassy to Maiduguri, where he revealed the donation during a condolence visit to Governor Babagana Zulum’s government. Joining him were Senior Humanitarian Advisor Nicolas Martin-Achard and Senior Political Advisor Florent Geel.
Ambassador Lang noted that Switzerland had previously supported the Borno Model in 2023 with $700,000 USD, a program focused on the reintegration of Boko Haram insurgents and civilians trapped in conflict zones. He emphasized that both the 2023 and 2024 donations reflect Switzerland’s continued solidarity with Borno State and its residents affected by crises.
Governor Zulum expressed his appreciation to the Swiss government for the generous contribution, assuring that the funds would be used effectively to help flood victims. He also thanked the Swiss delegation for their show of sympathy and support.
The severe flooding, triggered by a dam failure after heavy rainfall, has submerged thousands of homes, making it one of the most devastating flood events in the region.
