President Bola Tinubu has signed a bill to create the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons. This move, announced by National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu at a workshop on gender mainstreaming in arms proliferation prevention, reflects the President’s commitment to addressing the spread of illegal arms.
Ribadu, represented by Amb. Ibrahim Babani from the Office of the National Security Adviser, emphasized that this legislation would enhance the Centre’s ability to take coordinated and decisive action against small arms and light weapons. The workshop highlighted the need for gender-focused strategies to effectively manage and mitigate the impact of these weapons, particularly in conflict zones where women and children are disproportionately affected.
Ribadu also underscored the importance of regional cooperation, as outlined by the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, in tackling this pressing issue and ensuring a more inclusive approach to security.
