The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, revealing that 73.79% of candidates achieved credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and/or Mathematics.
Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of the Nigeria Office of WAEC, stated that out of the 1,805,216 candidates who took the examination, 215,267 results have been withheld due to reported cases of examination malpractice, which accounts for 11.92% of the total results. This figure marks a decrease from the 16.29% withheld in 2023.
Dangut noted that 1,301,941 candidates (72.12%) earned credits in the required subjects, while 1,685,889 candidates (93.39%) had their results fully processed. However, 119,327 candidates (6.61%) are still awaiting results due to ongoing issues.
The examination, conducted from April 30 to June 24, 2024, was held across four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
Dangut highlighted that the use of cell phones and organized cheating remain significant issues. WAEC is investigating these cases, and decisions on withheld results will be communicated through the respective schools. Candidates can appeal their malpractice cases via the WAEC website.
Additionally, Dangut mentioned that results from candidates in states that owe money to WAEC will not be released until payment is made. He urged these states to settle their debts to allow access to results for affected candidates.
