Yiaga Africa, a civil society organization, has called on local governments across Nigeria to adhere strictly to democratic principles in order to foster development in their communities. The organization emphasized this during a one-day workshop in Lagos, focusing on the People’s Assembly tool for deliberative democracy.
In a statement issued by Yiaga Africa’s Programme Officer, Olaniyan Sanusi, the group stressed the importance of providing a platform where citizens can voice concerns, discuss local issues, and engage with government officials. Sanusi highlighted that the People’s Assembly, which began in 2022, has now expanded from three to six local governments.
The workshop evaluated the effectiveness of this initiative, aiming to enhance dialogue between citizens and local authorities. The Vice Chairman of Kosofe local government, Oluwole Sosanya, noted that such engagements help bridge communication gaps, allowing elected officials to better understand and address the needs of their communities.
