The Yobe State Government has refuted claims that it has approved a new ₦70,000 minimum wage, clarifying that no official announcement has been made on the matter.
Amidst ongoing rumors, the government stressed that discussions are ongoing and that an official statement will be issued once a decision is reached.
The Director-General of Press and Media Affairs for the Yobe State Governor, Mamman Mohammed, made the clarification on Thursday, dismissing a circulating social media post as false and misleading. The post, which claimed that the new wage had been approved, lacked credible details and was discredited by the state government.
Mohammed pointed out that the Daily Trust newspaper has also disowned the content, stating that the logo used in the post was not authentic and that no such story was published on its website.
He condemned the unauthorized sharing of information on behalf of the government, urging the public to disregard the misleading post and to await an official announcement.
Adamawa State Commences Payment of ₦70,000 Minimum Wage
Meanwhile, in Adamawa State, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s administration has begun paying the newly approved ₦70,000 minimum wage. This follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent signing of the Minimum Wage bill into law, after extensive negotiations with organized labor.
Despite concerns from some governors about the economic feasibility of the new wage, Governor Fintiri has commenced payments to state employees in August 2024, with plans to extend the increase to local government workers by September.
This development has been met with widespread approval from civil servants in the state, who have expressed their gratitude to the governor for his prompt action, referring to him as a “man of his word.”
The implementation of the new minimum wage is being hailed as a significant achievement for the Fintiri administration, which has been dubbed the “Fresh Air Government” by its supporters.
