Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has spoken out against disciplining children for using their native language, calling it a “slavery mentality.” In a post on Instagram, Edochie emphasized the importance of teaching English for communication but condemned the practice of flogging children for speaking their mother tongue. He attributed this mindset to lingering colonial influences and encouraged Africans to embrace their heritage.
Edochie questioned if cultures like the Chinese would discourage their language in the same way, urging Africans to reject any notion that speaking native languages is inferior. “Never make your fellow African feel inferior for being African,” he stated, advocating for pride in African identity and linguistic diversity. Edochie’s message is a call to parents and educators to promote cultural pride and respect for native languages.
