The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, has appealed to residents and indigenes to refrain from participating in the nationwide protest scheduled for August 1. The protest, organized by various groups and citizens, aims to address the economic hardships facing many Nigerians.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, CP Igweh highlighted the potential security risks associated with the planned demonstration. He emphasized that the police have been working diligently to maintain peace and order in the FCT and expressed concerns that the protest could jeopardize these efforts.
The CP’s appeal comes amid rising tensions and widespread frustration over the country’s economic challenges. Protest organizers have criticized the government’s handling of issues such as inflation, unemployment, and the high cost of living.
“I want to appeal specifically to the residents and indigenes of the FCT,” Igweh said. “Please, lions do not destroy their dens. You cannot see a lion who destroys its den. I urge you not to join this protest because we have worked hard to ensure your safety.”
Igweh mentioned the police’s efforts in fighting crime outside Abuja, including in Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Niger, to ensure the safety of FCT residents. He recounted the loss of police officers in these efforts and implored residents to honor their sacrifice by not joining the protest.
“We don’t need you to be in the streets before somebody will challenge the police. Please, don’t destroy where you are living,” he added.
Igweh also pointed out the government’s efforts to provide good infrastructure in the FCT, noting improvements in roads and other facilities. He warned that miscreants could exploit the protest to cause destruction, undoing the progress made in the capital.
“Let us continue collectively to make the FCT safe. Let those who want to protest do so elsewhere. Act maturely and appreciate the efforts we have made for your safety. If you do this, we will be happy and continue to provide security for you. God bless all of you,” he concluded.
The Commissioner urged FCT residents to ensure the nation’s capital remains safe by shunning the protest and acting responsibly.
