Nollywood actress Caroline Hutchins Danjuma has voiced her concerns about the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.
According to Naija News, Danjuma shared her distress on Instagram after visiting the Sunday market in Ogba, Lagos State, where she found the prices of food items to be alarmingly high.
She detailed her experience, questioning how Nigerians are managing with the soaring costs. Danjuma noted that a tuber of yam is now ₦10,000, a paint bucket of potatoes is ₦9,000, a bag of rice costs ₦85,000, and two pieces of Titus fish are ₦5,000.
Expressing her sadness, Danjuma mentioned that she ended up shopping for her domestic staff, emphasizing her shock at the prices and her sympathy for the masses.
“I went to the Sunday market yesterday; it brought back memories of going there with my grandma,” she wrote. “How are you all coping? A tuber of yam is 10k, a small paint bucket of potatoes 9k, a bag of rice 85k, avocado pear 1k/1.5k (the woman wasn’t smiling before I asked for a discount). Two pieces of Titus fish 5k. How are you all coping? I was so sad I started shopping for my domestic staff. How are you all coping? I wasn’t so keen on pricing in the market; I just felt bad for the masses.”
Danjuma also expressed her concern for the mental and emotional well-being of Nigerians, suggesting the need for group therapy sessions and offering to start them herself.
“Everything is expensive. It is well with us. Just want to take the time to check up on you all today. Maybe we need group sessions for mental and emotional therapy; I am willing to start it up with some of you,” she added. “Sending you all big hugs. The sun will soon shine on us all.”
