In Plateau State, gunmen suspected to be herders have attacked farmers, resulting in injuries to four individuals. The victims were on their farms in the Bachi community, Riyom Local Government Area, when they were assaulted.
Solomon Mwantiri, President of the Berom Youths Moulders Association, confirmed the attack to The PUNCH on Wednesday, noting that it occurred on Tuesday afternoon. The injured were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.
Mwantiri reported that over 20 armed individuals, believed to be Fulani herders, targeted locals farming in Seheng, a village area in Bachi District. One of the injured, Caleb Bachen, suffered a fractured hand during the attack. Bachen described his harrowing experience, recounting how he was pursued and attacked by the gunmen despite his pleas for mercy.
Another victim noted that they had previously secured permission from the Fulani herders to farm the land but were recently threatened by them. The herders eventually appeared, shooting and attacking the farmers, which led to the injuries.
Efforts to reach Plateau State Command spokesperson Alabo Alfred for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone was turned off.
