The University of Benin (UNIBEN) will reopen on August 11 after a temporary closure prompted by student protests. The university’s management had suspended academic activities on July 4, instructing students to vacate their hostels immediately, as reported by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire.
In a circular issued on Wednesday, Registrar Ademola Bobola announced that students should return to their residences on Sunday, with classes resuming the following Monday. During the closure, the university addressed issues such as electricity, water supply, and renovations of the hostels.
The decision to reopen was made by the Senate on July 23 and 24, 2024, with input from the Governing Council and other stakeholders. To ensure good conduct, each returning student must swear an affidavit of undertaking. This affidavit must be uploaded to their Kofa page and a hard copy submitted to their departmental course adviser within two weeks of resumption.
Registrar Bobola warned that failure to comply with this directive could result in withheld results. He reassured students that the university has taken all necessary steps to resolve the issues that led to the closure and expressed confidence that academic activities will proceed smoothly. Students are advised to adhere to the resumption date and conditions to avoid any penalties.
