The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has enforced strict guidelines preventing top Nigerian universities like the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) from admitting students who scored below 200 in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Despite the general benchmark for university admissions being set at 140 during the 2024 policy meeting, JAMB clarified that universities are bound by their self-imposed cut-off scores. This means that institutions such as UNILAG and OAU, which have set their cut-off at 200, cannot admit any candidate with a score lower than their declared benchmark, even if it is above the general minimum of 140.
JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, emphasized that these universities must adhere strictly to their submitted benchmarks, underscoring that no institution can go below its self-prescribed minimum score for admissions.
