The SWEEP Foundation’s ‘Waste in the City’ materials recovery facility is making significant strides in waste management and sustainability in Nigeria. Located in Lagos, this innovative facility is leveraging advanced technology to sort and process waste, recovering valuable materials such as plastics, paper, and glass.
Ambassador Obuesi Phillips highlighted the facility’s impact, noting that it not only reduces waste but also generates jobs and supports local businesses. The recovered materials are sold to local enterprises, creating a closed-loop system that benefits both the environment and the economy.
Since its inception, the facility has processed over 410,000 kilograms of waste, created 50 local jobs, saved 500 tons of CO2 emissions, and generated revenue for businesses. Obuesi emphasized that the ‘Waste in the City’ facility exemplifies how effective waste management can be turned into a wealth-creating opportunity, showcasing a model for sustainable urban waste management.
