The National Assembly has intervened in the ongoing debate over the Federal Government’s proposal to set an 18-year age limit for students taking the West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The proposal, introduced by the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, has faced strong opposition from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and various civil society organizations, who have labeled the policy as outdated and oppressive.
In response to the backlash, the Senate has announced plans to hold a public hearing on the matter, allowing citizens and stakeholders to express their views. Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, assured that any government policy brought before the Senate would undergo thorough legislative scrutiny, including public consultations.
Meanwhile, Akin Rotimi, the spokesman for the House of Representatives, stated that the House has yet to take a position on the issue, as members have not been officially briefed. The matter will be reviewed when the House resumes.
