The National Economic Council (NEC) has expressed concerns over Nigeria’s agricultural sector amid widespread flooding that has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. The flooding, which has affected 29 states, has killed 205 people and displaced over 225,000 others. Kano State has reported the highest number of deaths at 35, followed by Jigawa and Bayelsa.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, speaking after a NEC meeting, highlighted the anticipated negative impact on agricultural yields due to submerged farmlands. They emphasized the need for enhanced food security measures and requested flood-affected states to submit detailed damage reports by September 9, 2024.
In response to the devastation, the NEC has reconstituted the flood committee to provide consistent intervention. This committee includes several state governors and federal officials, aiming to address the ongoing flood challenges and support affected regions.
U.S. philanthropist Bill Gates, addressing the NEC, stressed the importance of investing in Nigeria’s healthcare, nutrition, and agriculture sectors. Gates criticized the low per-capita spending on primary healthcare and urged for increased funding in this area. He also highlighted the need for better support for farmers through extension workers, fertilizers, and infrastructure, and advocated for the adoption of innovative crop varieties to address food insecurity exacerbated by climate change.
The NEC and stakeholders are now focused on mitigating the impact of flooding on food production and ensuring effective support and recovery strategies for affected communities.
