The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) expressed concern on Monday that societal rejection and stigmatization are forcing many ex-inmates to return to prison. This was highlighted by the Controller General of the NCoS, Haliru Nababa, at The Podium’s annual national conference on justice in Abuja.
Represented by DCG Abolade Benson, Nababa emphasized that despite efforts to reform and reintegrate former inmates, they often face societal rejection, leading some to voluntarily return to correctional facilities. “Society still sees ex-inmates as criminals, making reintegration difficult,” he said.
He also praised the government’s recent decision to raise the daily feeding allowance for inmates from ₦750 to ₦1,250, a move aimed at improving inmate welfare.
