Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has extended a donation of ₦50 million and six speedboats to assist victims of the recent flood in Borno State.
According to Naija News, the contribution is aimed at providing relief to those affected by the severe flooding in Maiduguri. During his visit to the city, Fintiri handed over the donation to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and urged for more support from other government bodies to aid the impacted communities.
Fintiri expressed his deep sorrow over the destruction and loss of lives, calling for swift federal government intervention to address the crisis. Accompanied by Governor Zulum and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Fintiri took a boat tour of the affected areas to assess the damage and offer comfort to displaced residents.
Joining Fintiri on this mission were Secretary to the State Government Awwal Tukur, members of the State Executive Council, and other top officials.
The flooding in Maiduguri has been linked to a malfunctioning spillway at the Alau Dam, which exacerbated the disaster.
NISA Warns of Potential River Flooding Across Nigeria
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NISA) has issued warnings of more severe river flooding expected across the country. Femi Bejide, NISA’s Director of Operational Hydrology, explained that the Maiduguri flood is primarily caused by heavy rainfall and blocked water channels, but riverine flooding could follow soon.
In an interview with Arise TV, Bejide emphasized the importance of flood preparedness, stating that NISA had already issued red flood alerts and shared their Annual Flood Outlook with the Nigerian government and disaster management agencies earlier this year.
Bejide clarified that the current flood in Maiduguri is classified as a flash flood, caused by excessive rainfall in a short period, while riverine flooding is still expected in the near future.
