The Borno State Government has launched a fumigation campaign in Maiduguri as floodwaters begin to recede following the devastating collapse of the Alau Dam on September 10, 2024. The flooding caused significant damage, including sewage system failures and contamination, raising concerns about potential disease outbreaks.
Abdurrahman Bundi, Senior Special Adviser on New Media to Governor Babagana Zulum, revealed that the fumigation efforts have been completed in 15 key areas, including hospitals and residential quarters. Despite these efforts, some farmlands and roads, particularly on the outskirts of Maiduguri, remain flooded, cutting off vital routes like the Maiduguri-Mafa-Dikwa-Gamboru Road, an important international trade link with Cameroon and Chad.
As displaced residents begin to return home, the government continues to assess the extent of the damage, with recovery and rehabilitation efforts underway.
