A former operative of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS), Seyi Adetayo, has called on the government to adopt a war-like approach in confronting the newly identified terrorist group, Lakurawa. Speaking on Channels TV, Adetayo emphasized that Lakurawa presents a grave threat comparable to groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, warning that failure to act decisively could worsen Nigeria’s security challenges.
The Nigerian military, represented by Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, confirmed that Lakurawa has been active in the Northwestern states of Sokoto and Kebbi, with alleged connections to terrorist cells from Mali and Niger. Security experts have raised concerns over the group’s growing influence, partly blaming local communities for tolerating their presence initially.
In response, Adetayo highlighted the need for a larger, stronger military force, warning that the recruitment of young men into such groups could endanger Nigeria’s future stability. However, retired Maj. Gen. Pat Akem advocated for calm, assuring that President Tinubu’s administration has implemented proactive measures to curb the threat without declaring an official war.
